Anxiety (American Psychological Association, 2025) is an emotion characterized by feelings of worry and fear. It is a normal stress reaction and can appear physically through sweat and rapid breathing and mentally through persistent restlessness. It is sometimes misinterpreted as fear, but a significant difference is that anxiety is worry about a future threat while fear is worry about a present threat.
Art has an alleviating effect on anxiety, with art therapy (Zhang et al., 2024) and calming music (Mallik & Russo, 2022) explicitly being methods for anxiety relief. As anxiety has been steadily increasing over the past 24 years, these methods have led to significant reductions in anxiety levels, especially among teenagers and young adults.
